First school for kids with autism in Qld

Queensland's first full-time school for primary-aged children with autism, The Sycamore School, hosts its official opening in Brisbane today.

The Sycamore School, a safe and inclusive educational space for 55 young people on the autism spectrum and their families, provides autism-friendly learning, choice of learning style, and a place of celebration for young people and families who need specialist support. The school opened its doors to its foundation students on January 23, 2017.

Brisbane parents of children with autism founded the school, after experiencing the problems children with autism have in the mainstream school system.

Funding for the school was arranged by financial advisory group, Australian Impact Investments, who brought together a roster of forward thinking charitable foundations -Cages Foundation, Community Impact Foundation, McKinnon Family Foundation and Tony Foundation - alongside the Catalyst Fund of Impact Investment Group and Foresters Community Finance.
