NSW police officer punched, kicked in head

A police officer has allegedly been punched and kicked in the head during a violent struggle north of Newcastle.

A 54-year-old sergeant was speaking to a man who punched him in an unprovoked attack just before 10.30pm on Friday at Shoal Bay, police say.

The pair fell to the ground and when a second officer came to assist, the sergeant was allegedly kicked by another man.

The stricken officer was taken to the Mater Hospital with an arm injury and concussion.

Security guards helped arrest a 19-year-old man, who has been charged with assaulting a police officer occasioning actual bodily harm and resisting arrest.

He has been granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court next month.
